MISSION AND HISTORY

Welcome to PANIRD,

PANIRD is the Pan-American Inherited Retinal Disease group, founded on October 23, 2019 at the Inter-American Ophthalmology Course at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, USA.
PANIRD is an affiliated subspecialty society to the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO). We are a group of friends dedicated to the study of inherited retinal and optic nerve diseases.

The objectives of PANIRD are:

• Promote the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of inherited retinal diseases (IRD’s)
• Encourage the exchange of knowledge in the IRD field between specialists from North, Central and South America
• Develop a continental IRD Fellowship program and fund a “PANIRD Beca” to support young ophthalmologists during their fellowship
• Organize annual meetings with the participation of ophthalmologists, geneticists and other medical professional working in the IRD field, from member countries and other guests
• Participate as a group in the meetings, symposiums, courses and congresses organized by the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO)
PANIRD holds open access to academic activities every Monday at 7.00 pm eastern time through Zoom or WhatsApp. We have a repetitive three weeks cycle that includes case discussion, journal club and lectures. We have already organized a calendar of activities throughout the academic year.

We thank you for joining us and collaborating in this quest.
Sincerely,

Carlos Mendoza MD
